Losing a daughter...

It’s great when you can take your own advice.

Last month I blogged about the advantages of using the internet to explore properties to rent – and this month I’ve been able to try it out first hand.

My eldest daughter – she’s 18 – has gone off to university. Rather than live at home and save me a fortune, though, she’s decided to study medicine in Edinburgh.

Of course, we’re all extremely proud of her – but it was left up to me to make sure she wasn’t living out of a cardboard box in Scotland’s capital.

So I logged onto Citylets and explored the various options available to a student on her budget (my budget). Obviously you want the best for your young ones so I was sure to consult her in the whole process.

Daughter-

We found a perfect place; not far from Uni, close enough to the bars and right next to the train station – perfect for those weekends when she decides she loves her family enough to come home(!)

It wasn’t until we dropped her off at her new flat that it really hit home that she was disappearing out of our lives and into her own. The bemused look on her face told its own story; the cardboard boxes groaned to be unpacked.

Now she’s gone it’s left a strange void in our lives. There’s no one there to insult my dress sense or call me a ‘dork’. No one to chauffer around like the queen. No one to tap me for cash.

The stark realisation that your baby has grown up may be hard to take and, believe me, it comes around sooner than you think.

Make the most of the time you have together and appreciate your lot, no matter how much cash it ends up costing you…
